1. Zoo Town Festival

2. Desert Hearts Festival

3. BAD Day Music + Arts Festival

Speaker 1:

Hey Sunny.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Vanessa.

Speaker 1:

What do you call two best friends that love music festivals?

Speaker 2:

Hmm, I guess you'd call them Besties.

Speaker 1:

Music Festivals, music festivals, friendship festies oh my gosh, I feel like we haven't done this in a while. We haven't. Are you recording?

Speaker 2:

yeah, I said that.

Speaker 3:

I said it so.

Speaker 1:

Sorry.

Speaker 3:

Here we're going I think. I have asthma Duh.

Speaker 2:

Since you were born.

Speaker 3:

You went to a camp for it dog.

Speaker 1:

You went to an asthma camp?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I did I feel like I can feel it too she said I think I have asthma.

Speaker 1:

Asthma cam, yeah, I did, and I feel like I can like feel it too. She said I think I have asthma yeah, we all were running up and down the basketball court in high school with our inhalers in our hands.

Speaker 3:

Dan was like this is what I have, our coach, we would throw it on the side.

Speaker 1:

And he pointed to the inhaler be like is that your asthma? Yo this your asthma it's like yes, that's my inhaler for my asthma, we did used to chuck them on the floor, didn't we?

Speaker 3:

and we would all share them, wow.

Speaker 2:

But it has been a long time. When was last time we recorded?

Speaker 1:

yeah, it's been a while, I think two weeks yeah only two weeks.

Speaker 2:

It feels like forever.

Speaker 1:

Well, it was two weeks, but then we didn't like that one so we scrapped it, okay, okay, yeah, we've been a little busy since mid-april. Sunny went to coachella you'll hear all about that I went to stagecoach and then we all went to mill valley music festival and then sunny and clark went to hawaii. For like a week. We did go to hawaii. I got engaged, you got engaged. We'll talk about that. And then this past weekend I was at a combined bachelorette bachelorette party for RJ and Penny, who were on for the Coachella episode.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we're sorry that we haven't been putting out episodes as regularly as we have been.

Speaker 3:

We were on a good roll there for a bit bit.

Speaker 1:

We were doing so good every two weeks, so good but it's okay, maybe we'll throw like three or four at you this is our first festival season where we've been doing festivities like full force.

Speaker 2:

I think at the beginning of the year we were like we're not going to very many festivals.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, now we're going to too many. We're going to too many. We have been going to more because of festivities, but that's not a bad thing and also we've been more aware of local festivals.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we're going to the sf jazz festival in two weeks.

Speaker 1:

by the time this comes out, it'll be this coming weekend and vanessa has drumroll bonnaroo oh my god, I'm so excited.

Speaker 2:

And then Stern Grove oh, yeah, so the plan was that me and Clark and a couple friends of ours and my dad, we're going to go to Stern Grove Music Festival, which is the free one that happens every weekend in San Francisco.

Speaker 1:

See, she got that ass ma.

Speaker 2:

I don't know. Okay, I'm sorry you can cut all that out. So that was the plan. And then I happened to email the press people at SF Jazz asking if we could go, and right away they emailed us back and they were like yeah, we'll put you on the comp list. So Vanessa's gonna be at Bonnaroo, I'm gonna be at the SF Jazz festival and Clark's gonna be at Stern Grove.

Speaker 1:

All festies at a different festival on the same weekend Look at us.

Speaker 3:

On Sunday at least.

Speaker 2:

That's right Sunday.

Speaker 3:

You and I will be Friday and Saturday at SF Jazz.

Speaker 2:

That's right, since it's a three-day one. So Sunday, the 15th, is the day that our Instagram will just be all over the place.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah, seriously, stories are going to be popping. This is the most popping stories ever.

Speaker 2:

Got lots of festivals coming up.

Speaker 3:

Look at us. Yay, it's like we do a podcast that's about music festivals.

Speaker 1:

We do. Whoa yeah, we've got so much coming up. So even with all that we just had happen, we're not slowing down. But I promise you we will have these episodes out for you guys next week. By the time this comes out, bonnaroo will be this coming weekend, oh yeah, and I have a wedding this weekend too. Oh yeah, I'm leaving tomorrow for a wedding in LA and then Bonnaroo. So let's talk about Bonnaroo.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I was goingnaroo, so let's talk about Bonnaroo. Yeah, I was gonna say let's try, and let's try and center ourselves and we're gonna concentrate on Bonnaroo, bonnaroo only where do we start?

Speaker 1:

it's in Manchester, tennessee okay this is my third Bonnaroo, so I went in 2022 and then Sonny and Clark and Alex and Pluma came with us in 2023. And then none of us went in 2024. But we are back, baby, you're back, I'm back. Sorry, I'm back. It's tough because I'm coming like we're going all the way from here, from California, yeah, which is a huge trek. When we were in Iowa, it was like an 11 hour drive, which is not bad, but because of that, we decided to do the glamping. Hell, yeah, because, one, our ambulance is not ready. Two, it would have cost us like $3,000 just to even drive there and back with the ambulance. Yeah, so we are doing the most expensive glamping that they have, which ouch tore pockets, but I mean, it's going to be a great time.

Speaker 2:

I love that you're glamping, though, and then have G8 passes. That's the most ridiculous thing. I was thinking this. I was like are they even going to be able to go through the entrance where the glamping is? Like, are they going to have to exit and go around All the way around?

Speaker 1:

Oh, my gosh Imagine. Probably not no, and I tried my best to see if I could get VIP tickets, but nobody can help us this out. It's okay, though, actually, if you're listening to this and you want to help me out, I'll be in area 931.

Speaker 3:

You guys are going to leave the festival to go use your bathrooms in the glamping area.

Speaker 1:

That's what ed was saying. He's like, okay, we might not have vip, but we have an ac unit in our thing and we have bathrooms and free showers. And for area 931, where we're camping, it's literally behind the what stage, the which?

Speaker 2:

stage oh god here we go do you want to explain that real quick?

Speaker 1:

bonnaroo thinks they're so funny naming their stages like this. But the main stage is called the what stage, then we have the witch stage, then we have this tent, that tent and the other stage and they used to have a who stage, I think, which I think now that's outside in outer room. Oh, my gosh, um, and then they have the infinity one. But can you just imagine you and your friends running around, not sober, just be like, what stage are you at this one? Yeah, you mean the tent.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, which stage and even I feel like most like experienced Bonnaroo goers that still happens, you know.

Speaker 1:

No, the other one. Wait, wait, what, like it's so ridiculous, but it's, it adds to the fun. Yeah, okay, so we wanted to give people some tips and tricks and maybe some packing must-haves. Do you want to start off, since you?

Speaker 2:

Sure, coming from California, things are more expensive in California usually, and so one thing that I learned is it's better to buy anything that you need to buy when you get to Tennessee. Normally I like to be prepared and have all my shit before I travel. Right, I went to a CVS in Manchester and I was like, oh my God, things are like half the price here than they were in the Bay Area. So that's one trick that I have if you're coming from California.

Speaker 1:

Anything else. Do you want to do any more? Nope, that was your one trick, that was my one, so I know we mentioned it all the time, but especially for a festival like this, you have to hydrate like crazy because it's so hot like you ain't ever seen this kind of heat before. Wet heat, tennessee heat in june is just hot and humid, and so please make sure you guys stay hydrated. But on that same note, you have to have a canopy. Uh, an easy up, an easy up, oh yeah yeah. The first year we went, there was a guy parked in front of us who was by himself, did not have a canopy, and he was like pasty white too. We felt so bad for him and thankfully, the people next to us they beat us to it, but they like invited him to into their oh, that's nice but otherwise it's like miserable.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, my other trick is that there's like hammocks everywhere, like in where in the woods and just like any of the woodsy areas that are there, there's always hammocks hanging from the trees. So I would say, take a little nap in one of the hammocks. It's really funny. Actually, the first year went there was like a 70 mile an hour windstorm, oh yeah, and we were like kind of camped close to a woodsy area that had a bunch of hammocks and all of a sudden you just hear people screaming.

Speaker 3:

And.

Speaker 1:

I'm like imagine, I can just imagine what it looks like over there, Just people like swinging from one tree to another in their hammock.

Speaker 3:

Like tar s in their hammock, like Tarzan. Yeah, I can't imagine that with one of the areas that had the hammocks in it had all these like really cool but also terrifying, like alien and monster like sculptures. Yeah, imagine seeing that too, and you're like flying around in a hammock.

Speaker 1:

It was like during the day. I think those creatures mostly came out at night.

Speaker 3:

No, like the statues oh the day. I think those creatures mostly came out at night. No, like the statues, oh the statues, Statues of creatures and stuff.

Speaker 2:

Do they just torture us at Bonnaroo?

Speaker 1:

Like what is this? No, Bonnaroo is the most magical place ever. No, I know it.

Speaker 3:

Have high tolerance when you go. You have to.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, something I've been seeing everywhere on the Bonnaroo Facebook page embrace the suck is what I keep seeing other people saying. Embrace the suck because, even though it is really freaking hot, it's been raining all week and there's like forecast for some rain, at least some of the days that we're there, which, honestly, is probably a blessing because it'll cool things down a little bit. Yeah, I definitely did that one day. It rained. Just embrace the fact that you're going to be muddy as fuck. Just embrace the rain, yeah, and you'll have a good time still, no matter what.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that reminds me of another tip. Actually, I think what Clark and I did to be prepared for rain is we folded up the rain outfit and then put it into a compression bag and like really compressed it in case we didn't need it, so that way it wouldn't take up a ton of space in our bag. We did end up needing it, I think the last night.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that last night it was raining so hard.

Speaker 2:

The weather is unpredictable. Be prepared for anything literally yeah.

Speaker 1:

So most of the time during the day people will just be in their bathing suits because they have that fountain, that you can splash around in. They have that water slide. So bring bathing suits, but also bring long sleeves, bring sweats and bring rain clothes and comfy, comfy shoes.

Speaker 2:

It's a huge freaking place yeah so you want to wear comfy shoes another thing for the rain is we got dollar store ponchos, oh yeah, and we always have them in our bags. Well, we were supposed to have them in our bags and then the last night when it started raining, our friend alex was the only one with his in his bag.

Speaker 1:

We just re-watched the bonnaroo vlog that his girlfriend paloma made and it was so cute. But, yes, there was a clip of him being the only one with the poncho.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and it was like we prepared and bought so many of them because he was the only one that had it. He was nice and dry on the walk back to our camp, but yeah, so get the ponchos, put them in your bag, though.

Speaker 3:

When they're still packaged up. They're so tiny.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 1:

It's worth it. Worth a dollar, worth a dollar. I think we got some of those blankets too.

Speaker 3:

Oh, the emergency blankets. Those are good. Those are good in a pinch too.

Speaker 1:

Okay, never mind, I was about to mention a different festival. We're not going to do that. Blasphemous Bonnaroo, bonnaroo, make sure you go around saying happy roo to everybody, giving high fives, high five Friday, when you're walking in give everybody a high five.

Speaker 1:

The festival lineup itself, like center roo, is overwhelming enough. It's like four days so many artists. But if you're camping, make sure you go check out all the fun stuff that's at outer roo. They have like a pride parade, they have the house of yes, which is like inspired by the brooklyn nightclub the main one, yeah and then so many different groups throw like parties and pre-games and like so much fun shit that I cannot wait for yeah, that actually am going to do this year. So make sure you check out all that stuff in Outer Rue too, because there's just something for everyone there.

Speaker 2:

Just to clarify Outer Rue is the campgrounds and Center Rue is the festival itself.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Right With all the stages and everything.

Speaker 2:

Okay, got it, let's see.

Speaker 1:

Oh, my God, I'm so excited for you I know I really wish you guys were going jealous, but it's okay.

Speaker 2:

You can have a cute engagement party glamping.

Speaker 1:

You must tell everybody that you're engaged I know my sister was like are you gonna wear your engagement ring to bonnaroo? I was like no, yes, she was like get a dupe.

Speaker 2:

I was like yeah, yeah, yeah I do have a dupe, I think okay, yeah, no, you don't want to lose that, but I wouldn't leave my finger.

Speaker 1:

That's what you think, yeah, okay, um, let's see. Remember how that one year, when we all went, I lost our recreational stuff, yeah, but then we gained six vip wristbands yeah okay, so this year what I did since we originally were going to take the ambulance and camp.

Speaker 1:

I had already bought a camping pass for 200 for tuesday entry and people on the facebook page were like, how do I get one? So I messaged. I was like I have one. If you want it, you can have it for free. And so the girl messaged me and so I mailed it to her, and so I'm hoping that the universe will bring me to vip respite I didn't do it out of the kindness of my heart.

Speaker 2:

I'm just kidding I did, I did, I did, but I know it was actually after I sent it I was like through give it, yeah, yeah oh I'm putting that into the universe for you, because we all know how great the vip is but I have a feeling that like it's gonna be freaking cold.

Speaker 1:

It's not even just kind of like how stagecoach was. Okay, that's it, that's enough. Um, anyways, yeah, should we move on to camping must-haves? Sure, or not? Camping packing must-haves, like packing things that you should not forget to pack. Okay, do you have some?

Speaker 2:

yeah, but I feel like they're in regards to camping, like yeah I mean they mostly all are okay.

Speaker 1:

Right a broom, oh yeah for what?

Speaker 2:

what's that for? Dust and dirt will get into your campsite and especially it's really easy to sweep if you have a tarp laid out. Um, so it's just like something quick and easy you can do.

Speaker 1:

That will keep your place clean yeah, a few things that I never used to think about to bring until like I've been older and done it a few times now. But like people will bring rugs to put on the grass, like in their campsite add a little luxury.

Speaker 2:

We like to do a tarp and then put the rug on the tarp.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's smart. Do what she said. Yeah, but also something you did a couple years ago that I was like why did I never think of that? But you brought the closet hanging, organized like the cubbies. Yeah, that's smart. Um, what else? The inflatable couches? Somewhere to sit other than chairs, camping chairs?

Speaker 2:

I've never been with anyone who's had an inflatable couch. But I see them around. They look so comfy.

Speaker 1:

No, I mean like the ones that you brought the purple oh, oh, that you like run in the air with, to like catch the air.

Speaker 3:

Oh those I saw some design influencer on uh during coachella had an air mattress that had a like a joint in it. So you, when you're not using it during the day, you fold it back over on itself and it's a couch and then, oh, like a hinge like a futon like a futon, yeah, but but inflatable one. I was like that's a cool idea too, I mean, but you won't have to worry about a bed, because it's already there.

Speaker 1:

We're gonna have a freaking mattress y'all be the most well-rested people yeah, clark, and I always sleep in the car.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, if you have the opportunity to be raised off the ground do it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that was my other thing I was gonna say is people have been transitioning to like cots yeah, because it just lifts you off the ground, and if it rains and your tent gets wet, you're still, still dry oh go ahead. No, you go ahead, oh okay.

Speaker 2:

The next one I have is paper towels. Even if you aren't planning on cooking at your campsite, the paper towels still come in handy.

Speaker 3:

I was going to say a big-ass fan, like one of those box fans or like a car, even like a car fan anything to just kind of ventilate and like move the air around yeah, there's a ton of pretty affordable rechargeable fans that you can get it, most places too, which is nice that they're rechargeable and not you're not having batteries and stuff that you have to dispose of yeah, fan, good one.

Speaker 1:

So another thing we brought last year was the or the last time we were there the shower, solar shower. We bought one, but I don't know that we'll need to bring it because we have complimentary showers at the Area 931 place.

Speaker 2:

It was really nice that we had the solar shower At Coachella. I'm sorry To just like have some sort of quote, unquote running water, oh oh yeah, so wash your hands, okay, maybe I will bring it. Then I would bring it, yeah earplugs.

Speaker 1:

Yep, make sure you get your eargasm earplugs and use our code festies10 for 10 off. Um, anyways, those I like forgot okay. Oh so I went to kendrick and sizzle last weekend. Sorry, I don't mean to get topic, but I was like really missing my earplugs there.

Speaker 1:

I said I was going to bring them totally forgot them and I was like God damn it, I wish I had them, because it was really loud and noisy and I could barely hear what they were singing. Oh no, so I will not forget those. Those are essential. Everyone needs to have some. Ok, what else do we have? Ooh, for my thick girls like me, bring some Vaseline or Bodyglide, or what is the other one.

Speaker 3:

Goldbond. Anything for chafing, because the Goldbond Friction Defense Stick.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's where it's at. Deodorant works too if you're in a pinch. Yeah, I normally use deodorant.

Speaker 3:

Any stick deodorant yeah.

Speaker 2:

Okay, but not the gel stuff, gotta be the white stuff. Oh really, yeah, to help with the chafing.

Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah, yeah, uh, back to the the earplugs thing for like two seconds too. When we were at bonnaroo last, where our campsite was, we were very close to the like edm little patch of woods. That is just the like EDM little patch of woods, that is just dance music all the way until like 4 or 5am, even with our regular earplugs that are good for concerts, having some construction foam earplugs just for that it's so easy to get like a 10 pack of them and throw them in your bag and just have them.

Speaker 3:

That's so good for a festival like that um, I'm raising my hand so he's raising her hand. I would like to hear all right class, everybody calm down.

Speaker 2:

I was raising my hand first. No, that reminded me teacher teacher uh, clark, and I like to bring a white noise machine. Oh, yo blast that shit also.

Speaker 1:

There's apps on your phone, so I hopefully won't have to deal with that, because we're like oh, far away from that you have an ac unit in your tent?

Speaker 2:

yeah, that's the white noise yeah, oh well good my last one is a table like a beer pong table that's so obvious, but I totally forgot it two years ago. Definitely make sure to have a table, because it's important to be able to have your stuff raised off the ground.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, table, put it on the list my packing list is so different because we're flying and we're at the glamping, so we don't have to bring a lot of the essentials. But it's like, right, we're not gonna have anything to cook with or we're gonna have to deal with the kitchen. We're probably just to have anything to cook with, or we're going to have to deal with the kitchen.

Speaker 1:

We're probably just going to have to like snacks and then buy meals there, but maybe we can make festies. I feel like Bonnery is also a lot kind of like Burning man in a way, where you barter for stuff.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

I can share my I don't know I can start IVs for people.

Speaker 2:

Nice, Someone was using our camping stove at same thing but different. So yeah, we were totally like chill with it when they asked. We definitely were not like what the fuck? We were like yeah, use our shit, but buy the food.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I was like that'll make for a good Instagram video or something of all the food we ate.

Speaker 3:

Yeah the diversity of what you could find to eat was really huge. You could get stuff for like five bucks all the way to 30 for something really yeah, there was a good spread too, and they just put out the culinary lineup and it's long as fuck. There's so many vendors we had some dope food. Yeah, I think I had a burger, maybe once when I was.

Speaker 2:

Oh, donuts, yeah, oh donuts yeah, those are so good. Yeah, for the showers, quick tip If there is a headliner that you don't mind missing, take your shower. Then there will be nobody there and it'll be hot. That's my recommendation A headliner. If there's one, you don't need to see, like Clark did not need to see Odessa.

Speaker 3:

Oh, so you went and showered then. It was a pretty nice shower. It was like one other person in all the stalls, so we were just like taking our sweet time in there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the only shower I remember ever taking there. It was like in the middle of the day and it was hot as fuck and the water was hot as fuck. I was like ugh, that's brutal.

Speaker 2:

This is awful, yeah, if you can stand it. I always say shower at night, because you'll feel better in your tent waking up sticky from all the sunscreen and sweat yeah, you had throughout the whole day it's getting sticky that's rough oh, as far as weather stuff goes, they do send alerts to your phone which can be like take shelter or anything like that. Listen to those updates. If they say take shelter, do it.

Speaker 1:

Ooh. Lower your canopies when you leave to go into the festival. Lower them in case there's windstorms, because that one year, where there's 70 mile an hour winds, we were right on the end by a fence and it was a cemetery for canopies. And so always lower your canopies as low as they can go before you head out.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, if you didn't hear anything else this episode, hear that Lower your easy ups. That is so important. This is kind of extra, but I usually buy weatherproofing spray and then if you spray your easy ups with that, the water just like slips off.

Speaker 3:

We had to cut holes in the tarp that was on the on our floor? Yeah, because there was too much pooled water, so we were just letting it have an escape route so we're like oh, that tarp, we're just gonna throw it away yeah.

Speaker 2:

The last one I want to say is don't be shy. This is a festival where you can 100 be. Be yourself, like. Let go be who you are.

Speaker 1:

Say hi to people. Thanks for saying that. I wanted to get that point across.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Take it from here, it's the most accepting place, where you don't ever feel judged for like anything that you're wearing. Like I mean, I'm not the type to walk around in like a little bit of clothing, but I feel like I was watching the Bonner videos wearing just like bikini top, with literally that shirt that you're wearing right now my like, my button up yeah.

Speaker 1:

I was wearing that over my bikini top and then just like bikini bottom and everyone's so nice and accepting and welcoming. Don't make you feel weird. It's a great freaking place to just go and be yourself and enjoy music and make new friends.

Speaker 2:

I can't wait, wait and see. No, I'm just kidding. Yeah, do we have anything else?

Speaker 1:

Nope, sunny's Festival.

Speaker 2:

Corner. Okay, july 4th and 5th we have Zoo Town Festival. It's in Missoula, montana. It's actually the first year. It's wait, what did I say yesterday? It's its inaugural year.

Speaker 3:

Inaugural.

Speaker 2:

Live music, outdoor excursions and local cuisine. The excursions is what caught my attention. They have fishing biking. You can float on the Clark Fork River, which looks dope. I know Clark and it is family friendly. The headliners are Hosier and Kacey Musgraves. Other notable artists are Lake Street Dive and Modest Mouse. July 3rd to the 7th we have Desert Hearts Festival, which is in Flagstaff, arizona. It is a house techno festival. They're all about one stage, one vibe, so everyone's on the same wavelength and seeing the same music together. They're also big on their theme camps. Some of them are Savage Hearts and Camp Dappington. They're also really into their art and they have a healing sanctuary where they do Reiki.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And crystals and cupping and all that stuff. Some of the performers are Chocolate Sushi, evan Casey and Mark Farina. I think we saw Mark Farina at Monarch.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yes, we did.

Speaker 2:

And the last one I have is July 12th. It's called Bad Day Music and Arts Festival. It's in Wilmington, north Carolina. Bad stands for Brooklyn Arts District. In the morning they have yoga and meditation. After that it's mostly located in the Bad Day Festival Village no cars, so they just shut down the street. They have live mural painting and they also have a section that's called Bad Kid Zone, which is kid-friendly, so the kids have stuff to do if they get antsy Performers are Railroad Earth, yonder Mountain String Band and Lettuce Nice friendly, so the kids have stuff to do if they get antsy performers are railroad earth, yonder mountain string band and lettuce nice. That's it for sunny's festival corner.

Speaker 1:

Leave a rate and review wherever you listen to us. Oh, I also want to give a shout out to our new Festi Jason, who messaged us, reached out to us, like we always tell you guys to do, and he let us know that he, you know, listens to the podcast, is a fan and kind of kicked us in the butt to get another episode out.

Speaker 2:

He was like is there another?

Speaker 1:

episode coming, I was like, yes, there is, I promise.

Speaker 2:

Tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

So I love that. That totally made our day, and he's going to be at Bonnaroo, so hopefully we can meet up and I can give him a Festies hat.

Speaker 2:

Please get a picture of that. I will get a picture of it.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, thank you, jason, and we'll see you on the farm.

Speaker 2:

Yay, happy root, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 1:

Bye, everyone Bye. See you next time, besties, thank you.
